AMD Instinct MI455X: Multi-Die Design, ZeBu Emulation and Advanced ASIC Verification

The launch of the AMD Instinct™ MI455X GPU at AMD Advancing AI 2026 demonstrates how AI accelerator development is increasingly dependent on advanced multi-die design, emulation and verification technologies. To support the development of its latest GPU, AMD leveraged Synopsys’ portfolio of design and verification solutions, including its 3DIC Compiler, ZeBu emulation systems and formal verification tools.

Multi-Die Design for Next-Generation AI

At the heart of the collaboration is the Synopsys 3DIC Compiler, which AMD used to accelerate advanced package development for its multi-die GPU. The unified platform enables exploration-to-signoff workflows, including die partitioning, floorplanning, automated die-to-die and die-to-package routing, and integrated multiphysics analysis.

These capabilities help engineering teams address increasingly challenging thermal, power and electromagnetic considerations while reducing manual design effort and improving confidence in advanced packaging.

ZeBu Accelerates Software Readiness

One of the most significant aspects of the announcement is AMD’s use of Synopsys ZeBu emulation systems to accelerate software development before silicon was available.

By validating the GPU at both IP and subsystem levels, ZeBu enabled earlier software stack development, rapid debugging and faster design iterations. AMD also leveraged ZeBu’s advanced save-and-restore capabilities to improve emulator efficiency and support complex debugging workflows.

According to Synopsys, collaboration between the engineering teams enabled emulation models of up to 20 billion gates, demonstrating the scale of today’s AI accelerator designs.

Verification Across the Entire SoC

Alongside emulation, AMD utilised Synopsys VC Formal™, VCS® RTL simulation and VC LP verification solutions to improve verification coverage and accelerate bug detection across both die-level and SoC-level environments.

By combining formal verification with scalable simulation methodologies, AMD increased confidence in silicon readiness while reducing integration risk throughout the verification process.
